On February 22, 1999, a Telescope Night was held by STAR members for the third grade classes of Indian Hill School in Holmdel. All eleven classes, averaging 25 students per class, were invited. This year the event was to be split with half the classes attending on the previous Thursday, but the weather did not cooperate. All of the classes attended the Monday event and were rewarded with good, but very cold views.
Mercury was visable for a few minutes while STAR members set up five telescopes and a few binoculars. The highlight of the night was the conjuction of Jupiter and Venus. Saturn, the Moon , and M42 had their shares of oohs and ahhs too. Lines for each telescope stretched 15 to 20 deep from about 6:30 PM until 8:00. Larry will be providing me with a list of members attending, and I will update this page accordingly.
Larry Campbell, who was the club coordinator of the event had the following comments. " The STAR Party Monday night for the third graders of Indian Hill was a huge success. The evening sky was crystal clear; (Thank You, Kay.) The classes arrived and departed on schedule (3 classes every 20 minutes ). This kept a constant stream of viewers at the scopes from 6:30 till 8:30 PM. Many thanks to all those who were able to come out and support me with this event; including Joe Cascella, Wayne Cromwell, Dave Hayden, Mike Polak, and Glenn Mathews?. "
