"Surveying the Universe with Supernovae" March 4, 2010

Special Guest Speaker: Prof. Saurabh W. Jha, Rutgers University

The last decade has seen a revolution in our understanding of the history and contents of our Universe. Professor Jha will describe how a class of exploding stars, called type Ia supernovae, are used to measure the expansion history of the Universe. Observations of bright, nearby supernovae (often discovered by amateur astronomers), combined with measurements of faint, distant supernovae have led to the astounding conclusion that the Universe is expanding faster and faster, driven by "dark energy" about which much remains to be learned.

S*T*A*R Winter Social and Equipment Demos February 4, 2010

Instead of our regular meeting with a speaker, for February we will have an interactive session with equipment displays, social interaction, and hors d' oeuvres. Regular members can have time to mingle, and we hope to have some newcomers join us to find out more about our club and Astronomy as a hobby. Bring any equipment you want to show off, have help with, or perhaps swap for something else! Bring any books or magazines you want to give away.

Members of the public who may have telescopes or other equipment they need help with are welcome!
